Modeling and Simulation of Mine Gases Flow

  • Original language description

This monograph deals with numerical modeling and simulation of dangerous mine gas leakage, from the underground to the surface. The Fluent software was used for modeling and simulation of mine gases flow. Leakage of mine gases depends on many natural and technical mining conditions. With the closure of mines and thus the end of the ventilation the situation is considerably worse. One of the problems encountered in the areas with abandoned mining activities in coal underground mines is emergence of methane from residual parts of the coal seams. Even though a great progress was made in the prevention of possible danger to human life and property resulting from uncontrolled accumulation of methane in buildings on the surface, it is not possible to exclude the risk of explosion with absolute reliability. Exclusivity of this approach is the effort to visualize and demonstrate how the gas behaves in a porous environment in the model examples that were tested. Without the use of numerical flow technology, commonly referred to as CFD programs, we can practically never visualize and learn the situation in flowing through porous compact rock which is unaffected by human activities except for the exploratory borehole. Thanks to the use of the Fluent software, we are able to theoretically simulate and subsequently learn how ambient influences may alter and act upon the flow from underground to the surface and change the immediate conditions affecting this flow. This monograph responds to the need for knowledge of natural processes in the given area, and therefore deals with the simulation and modeling of methane flow from underground to the surface through the rock massif.
