Adsorptive removal of sulphates from aqueous matrix using a fixed bed column packed with orange peel
Original language description
Sulfate anions represent very important wastewater pollutants, which appear in the effluents discharged from copper mines. In this study, for the first time, an attempt has been made on the removal of sulfate anions by an orange peel. Effect of inlet flow rate (10-40 ml/min), sorbent bed height (5-15 cm) and initial SO4 concentration (100 mg/l) on the adsorption of SO4 from aqueous solution were studied. The adsorption data obtained from these experiments were then fitted into two dynamic adsorption models, Thomas model and the Yoon-Nelson model, in which the Thomas gave better fit to the experimental data under various conditions. The highest uptake capacity, qe, was obtained when a 10 cm bed depth was used at an inlet concentration of 100 mg/l and a flow rate of 10 ml/min.
