Adsorption of hexavalent chromium using cones of conifers in a fixed-bed column study

  • Original language description

The dynamic removal of hexavalent chromium by cone pine mixture was studied in a packed column reactor. The values of column parameters were predicted as a function of flow rate (5-15 ml/min), bed depth (5-15 cm), particle size (1-2 mm) and inlet metal ion concentration (100 mg/l). The performance of fixed bed columns was described through the breakthrough curves obtained from column experiments. The Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models were applied to predict different parameters of the column like adsorption capacity (Thomas model) and time required for 50 % breakthrough (Yoon Nelson model). Also, the theoretical breakthrough adsorption curve has been obtained. These models fitted well the adsorption data with coefficient of correlation R2 > 0.9 at different conditions. The cones of conifers was shown to be suitable adsorbent for adsorption of hexavalent chromium using fixed bed adsorption.
