Great Expectations: Academic Writing through Future University Students' Eyes
Original language description
The paper describes a study conducted at the Faculty of Arts, PU Olomouc, which aimed at future 1st-year students' expectations concerning academic writing. As the humanities students are requested to write a variety of papers, the topic of academic writing, either in Czech or in English, is highly relevant for them. The pilot study was carried out using group interviews of semi-open questions dealing with their writing experience at secondary schools and their expectations concerning writing for academic purposes at university. A qualitative method of coding was chosen to analyse the answers which revealed that the future students have a very vague notion of writing within the academic context. The research was mainly done to help to design a curriculum for academic writing courses; however, it might be also useful for academic writing teachers from similar cultural backgrounds, either to plan their academic writing curricula and to understand their students' starting position and help them surmount the barrier between writing within secondary school and university contexts.
