FRACTOGRAPHY ANALYSIS OF CHIP FORMATION IN CERAMICS.

  • Original language description

The indentation technique is commonly applied for the ceramic material testing. By use of the indentation technique, beside the median/radial cracks, the important parameter is the initiation of lateral cracks causing the chipping. The relation between the median/radial crack and lateral crack propagation was determined and the corresponding mechanisms of chipping formation was presented. The chipping formation represents the limiting parameter of the indentation fatigue. The microfractography of chipping surfaces was carried out and the specific characteristics of formed one-sided and multilateral chipping were analysed. The striations were observed on the chipping surface in several cases.
