MECHANISM OF CHIPPING FORMATION DURING REPEATED LOADING OF CERAMICS
Original language description
The ceramic materials (Al2O3 and Si3N4) are subjected to cyclic loading. Considerable work has been done in the field of creep and fracture behaviour of ceramics, in contrast little is known about their response to cyclic loads. For this reason, it is useful to study its fatigue behaviour, which is undertaken to estimate the fatigue properties of two types of ceramics using the indentation technique. The sharp indenter (Vickers) is indented on the specimen under constant load and is repeated at the samepoint up to the chipping formation from the corners of the indentation. This formation represents limiting parameter of the fatigue behaviour of ceramic materials and is connected with the final stage of the lateral crack propagation. The relation between the median/radial crack and the growth of lateral crack is discussed. The feature of chip area is analysed in detail.
