Analysis of crack formation in ceramic material by repeated indentation loading
Original language description
In this study the damage of the surface area in ceramic materials under local compressive loading by use of cyclic indentation technique, known as indentation fatigue, is investigated. The present solution is based on the repeated indentations with a sharp indenter and on the evaluation of relations between the indentation load and the number of indentation cycles leading to the chipping formation. The indentation fatigue is carried out by indenting repeatedly onto the same point of the specimen surface(application of Vickers hardness tests). The number of cycles to chipping formation and the size of chipping area are measured. Simultaneously, the rate of lateral crack growth is included in the present study. During cyclic indentation, the initiated lateral cracks propagate what results in the chipping process. The microfractography analysis of fracture surfaces in chipping area, including the striation on its surface, is performed using SEM. The analysis is also developed to determin
