Effect of viscosity and surfactants on flow regime transition in bubble columns
Original language description
Experiments were performed with bubble columns to investigate the effect of physico-chemical properties of the liquid phase on the overall steady gas hold-up and on the stability of the homogeneous flow regime. The critical values of holdup and gas flowrate were extracted from the measured data using drift-flux plot. The results proved the general expectation that the liquid viscosity destabilizes the homogeneous regime and advances the transition to the heterogeneous regime. The critical values can becorrelated with the viscosity by a power-law fit. On the other hand, the effect of surface active agents (inorganic salt) may have ambiguous effects on the hydrodynamics of bubble columns. Therefore, farther experiments are needed to obtain a larger setof data and to arrive at more conclusive results.
