Drop Evaporation Test for stress corrosion cracking study
Original language description
The drop evaporation test (DET) was developed for study of stainless steels resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) at elevated temperatures 120 - 300 °C under constant external load and dropping of diluted sodium chloride water solution. The resistance to SCC is determined according to time to fracture - tensile stress relations and conventional threshold stress. The alloy (steel) NiCrWTiAl 35-15-5 after thermal hardening and long-time service exposition was tested under DET conditions and corrosion cracks were evaluated by metallography and fractography. The microscopic pits and corrosion crack tips coordinates measurement by the travelling microscope method allowed to determine their lengths and rates as function of time and stress intensity factor. These calculated rates were higher when cracks leaving the pits. The resistance to intergranular corrosion was compared by DL-EPR (double loop electrochemical potenciokinetic reactivation) method.
