Comparison of Hydrogen Effects on the Behavior of C-Mn Steels Tested by Different Methods
Original language description
Effects of hydrogen are studied on the behavior of plates manufactured from A516 Gr70 steel or from similar ones. Resistance of steels to hydrogen embrittlement is determined in accordance with NACE TM 0284 and also from tensile tests. Tensile specimensare taken in three distinct plate orientations (longitudinal, transversal and through-thickness) and electrolytically hydrogen charged prior to tensile tests. In the case of the NACE test (without applied stress) the resistance of steels improves significantly if quenching and tempering or at least "high temperature" normalizing (at 1000°C) are applied. Segregation bands in the mid-thickness of the plates, enriched especially in manganese, represent predominant sites for hydrogen induced cracking. The role of non-metallic inclusions seems to be less important. Tensile tests performed on previously electrolytically charged specimens do not confirm the beneficial role of quenching and tempering or "high temperature" normalizing. The degre
