Determination of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide by capillary isotachophoresis
Original language description
In this work, a method of capillary isotachophoresis (ITP) for the study of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMB) sorption on various clays1 was developed. CTMB represents cationic surfactants that have detrimental effects to aquatic organisms and must be removed from water environment2. The used leading electrolytes (LE) consisted of 5 mM potassium hydrogen carbonate and acetic acid (pH=4.5). The terminating electrolytes (TE) contained 5 mM ß-alanine and acetic acid (pH=4.0). The concentrations of CTMBin used aqueous solutions were bellow its critical micelle concentration, i.e., ca. 0.7 mM.Adsorption of CTMB to the ITP separation compartment was prevented by non-ionic polymers, such as hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC), polyvinylalcohol (PVA), and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), which were dissolved in LE. They decrease the ?-potentials of the capillary walls3. When using HEC, the zones of CTMB monomers and also micelles were recorded as a result of the ITP concentration effect4. However, in
