Standard test method for potentiodynamic polarization measurements for localized corrosion susceptibility of Fe-, Ni-, or Co- based alloys (ASTM G61) was applied for the detection and comparison of sensitivity of selected stainless steels to intergranular corrosion. The reduced Cr content or pitting resistance equivalent value at grain boundaries decreases critical pitting temperature, depassivation and repassivation potential values. The parts of polarization curves (like loops, waves) are shifted to the lower potential values and higher current density compared with non-depleted state. The experimental results, including micropitting and etching along grain or phase boundaries, confirmed this approach.
