Influence of liquid viscosity on rising bubble behavior

  • Original language description

Experimental study of single levitating bubbles is presented in the contribution. Long-term observation of the bubbles was done in a downward liquid flow. Influence of liquid viscosity on bubble behavior was evaluated. In order to obtain various viscosity values, water and 40wt% glycerol solutions were used as a liquid. Our research was concerned with medium-sized ellipsoidal bubbles. Bubble sizes were ranging from 50 to 400 mm3, with characteristic values 1 < Eo < 40, Re > 100. Path of the rising bubble is not a straight line, but it looks like a helix or a harmonic curve. Upper projection of bubble trajectory has an ellipsoidal shape. Bubble motion can be affected by a liquid rotation. The rotation is caused by stirring and is also influenced by Coriolis effect. To evaluate a significance of Coriolis effect, experiments with different stirring orientation were conducted.
