Experimental study on bubble lifetime in various liquids
Original language description
The effect of liquid properties (surface tension, viscosity) on bubble lifetime is investigated experimentally. A parent bubble of equivalent diameter 6-12 mm levitates in downward liquid flow, hence it can be observed until its breakup. Liquids used inthe experiments are tap water, glycerol solutions, butanol, and calcium chloride solution. Glycerol solutions provide higher liquid viscosity, butanol is used to evaluate an effect of decreased surface tension, and calcium chloride solution represents the liquid containing an amount of negative surfactant. The experimental results show that bubble stability is mainly influenced by the value of surface tension. The effect of liquid viscosity is less pronounced.
