Behavior of Rising Bubbles - Effect of Liquid Properties
Original language description
This contribution reports on an experimental study of the motion of gas bubbles levitating in liquid counterflow. It was observed that the bubble experiences periodical wobbling motion, and follows a sinusoidal or helical trajectory. A simple hydrodynamic model of horizontal motion was proposed. Evidently, the horizontal motion caused by drift force affects the trajectory shape significantly. According to the model, horizontal velocity and bubble inclination oscillate with the same frequency. The frequency can be evaluated quantitatively. The model predictions were compared with experimental data and a good agreement was found. E xperiments were focused on a levitation of single air bubbles (equivalent diameter 2.7 - 9.1 mm) in a downward liquid flow. The medium-sized bubbles are ellipsoidal with the axis parallel to the direction of bubble motion. Mirror, placed next to measuring section, provides two perpendicular projections of bubble motion.
