Clarification of Cause of Defects in Rolled 42CrMo4 Steel Blooms
Original language description
In this paper we return to our previous research aimed at finding the cause of cracking in the core of rolled blooms of 36CrMo4 and 42CrMo4 steels. In those experiments, only the steel upon forming was available. This time we performed a laboratory wedgetest of formability of this steel in as-cast state and compared the regions where cracking occurred with results of FORGE 3D simulation. First cracks began to form when the Cockroft-Latham criterion value was as low as 30 MPa. These are the values whichcan be expected to be found at the tip of internal cracks under normal plant rolling conditions. Therefore, the laboratory simulation of rolling was performed with both original and modified roll pass designs. It was shown that during rolling in the blooming the tensile stress in the centre of the rolled product is not sufficient to cause crack formation.
