TiAl-Nb based alloy prepared by mechanical alloying
Original language description
A possibility of preparation of TiAl-Nb based alloy using mechanical alloying in ball planetary mill was studied. Experimental material Ti-45Al-10Nb was prepared from Ti and Al powders and cut Nb wire of 0.24 mm diameter. The Ti-Al-Nb powder mixture wasmilled during 72 hours at the rate of 150 rpm. Statistic distribution of powder particle size was determined using laser particle sizer. The compacted and sintered alloy had the average content of 42.74 wt.% Ti, 19.29 wt.% Al and 19.75 wt.% Nb. In the microstructure, the phases based on Nb-Ti-Al or Nb-Ti-Al-O (with 81.3 wt. % Nb, 14.0 wt. % Al and 3.7 wt. % Ti or with 35.3 wt. % Nb, 28.8 wt. % Al, 26.7 wt. % Ti and 8.8 wt. % O, respectively) were found. Large amount of oxygen in the sintered alloy was determined. Microhardness values showed an important fluctuation in relation to inhomogeneity in chemical composition.
