Structural characteristics of TiAl-Y alloys prepared by plasma melting
Original language description
Alloys based on TiAl are very perspective material in automotive and aeronautical industry due to their outstanding properties such as high specific strength, low density, high elastic modulus and creep resistivity. In many applications in aerospace, automotive, but also in other industries they could replace currently used materials. The main reason, why this is happening only in very small extent is fragile and problematic production of these alloys. Production of TiAl alloys is difficult, because titanium and aluminium are reactive materials. Therefore these alloys are prepared in inert atmosphere. The properties of TiAl-based alloys can be improved by reducing grain size and inter-lamellar spacing. This can be achieved by alloying, or by influencing the process of preparation. Yttrium is one of the elements that can improve these properties. These TiAl alloys with nominal compositions of Ti-47Al (atomic ratio) and various yttrium additions 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 at. %, were produced
