Forging of crankshafts for ship engines
Original language description
Leading world manufacturers of ship engines strive for a change in design. The main target consists in reduction of mass of the ship engine. This effort is manifested also in design of crankshafts. One possibility is to replace the semi-built-up design by a welded variant. Compared to original engine this variant would reduce the dimensions and therefore also mass of the crankshaft and naturally also the mass of the whole engine. The principle of mass reduction consist in shortening of the overall length of crank throw, since the welded variant does not require necessary clasping force for individual crank throw and main pins and it is therefore not necessary to form massive crank web - contrary to the original hot-pressed main pin. Type L 60 MC is a representative of such crankshafts. Manufacture of crank throw for these types of crankshafts was verified by modelling and it is described in experimental part.
