Heavy metals in fine-grained fractions of E-waste

  • Original language description

The concentration of heavy metals in the environment is gradually increasing, which has a negative impact on a number of living organisms, including humans. Particles of very small dimensions are particularly dangerous. Plants processing e-waste may be one of the sources of contamination. Samples of crushed parts of e-waste containing precious metals were separated by a vibration sieving machine into fractions ranging from 3 to 0.15 mm. For these fractions, contents of metals were determined by the ED-XRF method. It was found that the e-waste contained a number of heavy metals, and it is possible to establish also a certain connection between the content of individual elements and the granulometric class. Zinc content increased in the finest fraction with a size below 0.15 mm approx. ten times in comparison with a 3 mm thick fraction. Similarly, this difference is approx. 20 times higher for chromium, nickel and cadmium. The lead content in a fine fraction makes approx. 2 wt. %, which corresponds to approx. the 50-fold increase in comparison to the coarse fraction. The tin content also increases significantly even by 2 orders.
