The effect of moisture on the release and enrichment of heavy metals during pyrolysis of municipal solid waste
Original language description
The investigation of the effect of moisture on the release and enrichment of heavy metals during pyrolysis of municipal solid waste (MSW) is essential. This is important due to: (i) the increasing amount of MSW per capita resulting in an increasing amount of metals in MSW, consequently leading to an enhancement of these metals in the solid product of pyrolysis beyond the normalized level; (ii) the effect of moisture on the overall cost of the pyrolysis process; and (iii) the utilization of the pyrolysisproducts. Seven metals were selected for evaluation and they included: As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Ni, Pb and V. The MSW samples with moisture contents of 0, 30, and 65 wt.% were investigated. In general, a diminution and an enhancement of metal content was observed for As, Cd, Hg, Ni, and V in both liquid and solid fractions of pyrolysis with an increase of the MSW moisture. A consistent trend was also observed for the relative enrichment index (REI) and release of heavy metals for the majority of
