Sodium zinc carbonate as precursor of nano-ZnO in photoactive nanocomposites prepared by calcination process

  • Original language description

ZnO nanoparticles were prepared by heat-induced decomposition of Na2Zn3(CO3)4.3H2O clusters synthesized from zinc chloride and sodium carbonate in water suspension of kaolin. Kaolin KKAF was used as substrate on which the clusters were formed. Such obtained material was thermally treated at 100 - 600 oC in order to obtain ultrafine ZnO nanoparticles anchored to the kaolin. XRD analysis revealed highly crystalline nanoparticles obtained at a temperature above 400 oC. Nanocomposites contain ~ 40 wt.% of ZnO. Morphology was observed using TEM and ultrafine ZnO nanoparticles evenly distributed on the kaolinite surface were found. Preferred growth of ZnO nanoparticles on different kaolinite surfaces was investigated using molecular simulations. Photocatalytic activity of the nanocomposites was found higher than of pristine ZnO nanoparticles which together with high stability (according to leaching tests) is a good prerequisite for the use of samples in various green applications.
