Potential environmental life cycle impacts of fuel cell electric vehicles powered by hydrogen produced from Polish coke oven gas
Original language description
This study analyzed greenhouse gas emissions in the life cycle of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. These included models running on hydrogen derived from COG. Coke oven gas (COG) is a by-product of the coking process of coal, and includes hydrogen, methane, and other gases. Hydrogen obtained from coke oven gas may become a source of green energy. Fuel cell electric vehicles and hydrogen have the potential to drive future mobility. To obtain a purity of hydrogen that meets the requirements of a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), hydrogen can be separated from the coke oven gas in the process of pressure swing adsorption. An environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) of fuel cell electric vehicles powered by hydrogen produced from Polish coke oven gas was conducted. The direction of hydrogen production strategies in Poland is presented. The analyses included the entire life cycle of FCEVs with the production of hydrogen from COG in a Polish coke plant. A comparative analysis of FCEVs and other alternative fuels was conducted and the main determinants of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of FCEV electricity consumption was given. Importantly, this is the first attempt at a LCA of FCEVs in Poland.
