Interesting Cr2O3/ZnO and bulk g-C3N4/(Cr2O3/ZnO) nanocomposites – preparation, characterization and potential use as photocatalysts with AO7 dye and phenol
Original language description
The formation of so-called floral hierarchical heterostructures is achieved through the prepa-ration of Cr2O3/ZnO nanocomposites, which are often prepared in two steps [1,2]. Of particular interest is the composite prepared with a Zn/Cr ratio of 0.5, which results in the formation of ZnCr2O4 directly [3].In the course of our research, we prepared Cr2O3/ZnO composites according to the study us-ing the sol-gel method, with the Cr2O3 precursor dispersed in the ZnO sol-gel matrix [2]. The preparation of nanocomposites of different Cr2O3/ZnO ratios (four samples: 0.02-0.10), includ-ing the preparation of ZnO and Cr2O3 itself, was carried out. Subsequently, in order to enhance the properties and photocatalytic effect, two additional bulk g-C3N4/(Cr2O3/ZnO=0.02) materials were prepared in two ratios (90 wt%:10 wt% and 80 wt%:20 wt%).All prepared materials were subjected to characterisation using a range of analytical-structural techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrosco-py (FTIR), photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) techniques. This was complemented by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis for elemental mapping and morphology explana-tion. The photodegradation experiments for the dye (AO7) and phenol were conducted under ultraviolet/visible (UV/Vis) irradiation. In terms of photodegradation, the composite material Cr2O3/ZnO=0.02 and bulk g-C3N4/(Cr2O3/ZnO=0.02)=80 wt%:20 wt%, which was irradiated by UVA or Vis, exhibited the greatest photodegradation potential for the AO7 dye, with approximately 90% degradation. The bulk g-C3N4/(Cr2O3/ZnO=0.02)=80 wt%:20 wt% composite exhibited the most effective photo-degradation activity, with a degradation rate of 95% under UVA light. With regard to the case of phenol photodegradation, it was observed that the composite g-C3N4/(Cr2O3/ZnO=0.02)=90 wt%:10 wt% demonstrated the most favourable performance, ex-hibiting degradation rates of 80 % in UVA, 85 % in Vis and 55 % in UV-Vis combination. The Cr2O3/ZnO=0.02 composite using phenol demonstrated the most effective photodegradation in the UV-Vis combination, with a rate of approximately 55%. The results of the DRS analysis indicated that the energy values of the indirect forbidden bands for the Cr2O3/ZnO=0.02-0.10 composites exhibited a tendency to decrease as the individual ratios Cr2O3/ZnO increased, re-spectively.Acknowledgement:This work was financially supported by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, Czech Republic (con-tract no. 8F21007) through the research project cooperation between the AtomDeC Consortium by funding received from the Visegrad group(V4)-Japan 2021 2nd Joint Call on “Advanced Materials”.References[1] P.
