Progress and challenges of crack self-sealing concrete with hydrogel: A critical review
Original language description
The timely and effective repair of leakage of cracked concrete has always been a focus of concern in the engineering field. Hydrogel-based self-sealing, noted for its rapid swelling and high efficiency, is an emerging technology particularly suited for humid or water-rich environments. This paper systematically reviews the scientific definition of self-sealing, common hydrogels and their healing effects, the composition characteristics and modification methods of hydrogels, the selfsealing mechanisms and state evolution of hydrogel in crack, the design and preparation methods and performances of self-sealing concrete. Moreover, five existing testing methods for crack selfsealing efficiency were summarized, and the current applications and significant challenges for self-sealing technology were discussed critically. In the future, research should focus on the design and modification of hydrogels to address important technical challenges, such as the reduction in mechanical strength, inhibition of secondary or repeated swelling of hydrogel in the crack, and the attenuation of long-term sealing efficiency.
