Original language description
Object-relational databases use also SQL as a definition language, although it is extended in terms of the object technologies. Principally it is based on the implementation of the extended data types ? collections, inheritance, object identifications, methods. After SQL-92 the effort had began on the next generation of the SQL standard which was naturally called ?SQL3?; the idea was to add the object elements to the language. The object constructors definition was then published in SQL: 1999 version (Melton, 2003). The SQL:2003 standard further extends the SQL by SQL/XML. The latest SQL:2006 standard defines import and storage of the XML data in SQL database and the manipulation with them. Moreover, it offers the means allowing the XQUERY involvementinto SQL The object features are variously implemented in commercial database systems.
