Quality of fibres obtained from waste paper from the perspective of the circular economy

  • Original language description

Waste paper is a key source of cellulose fibres, reducing the need for virgin wood in paper production. To support sustainable development, combining natural fibres with synthetic polymers is widely explored, especially in the food industry. Reliable material sources require information on pollutants and their migration potential. Using 0.2M CH3COOH for extraction, calcium carbonate-based filler was removed from office paper with 86% efficiency. Analysis identified 138 compounds, including those from virgin wood (31), production additives (34), and printing inks (67). Printing inks contain solvents (25), UV stabilisers, flame retardants, and adhesion promoters. The GHS system assessed health and environmental hazards, highlighting persistent pollutants like benzophenone and bisphenols. CH3COOH extraction reduced hazardous compounds by 93%.
