Original language description
In optical communication systems, the isolator provides a unidirectional transfer of electromagnetic radiation from a laser source to an optical fiber. The basic structure consists of a central region formed by an InP semiconductor multilayer with gain sandwiched between a semiconductor buffer film and a semiconductor substrate. To enable propagation of waveguide modes both the buffer and the substrate display a lower permittivity than the central region. The semiconductor buffer is covered by a ferromagnetic alloy layer with the in-plane magnetization perpendicular to the propagarion vector of guided modes. The waveguide TM modes penetrating through the buffer to the surface of magneric film display amplitude and phase changes dependent on the sign ofthe transverse magnetization in the magnetic film and the sign of the longitudinal propagation constant of the waveguide mode.
