    Antimicrobial ciclopiroxolamine/clay nanocomposites

  • Original language description

The clay minerals are commonly used materials in pharmaceutical field both as inorganic excipients or active agents. We focused on the development of long-acting antimicrobial formula where clay minerals act as inorganic antimicrobial drug carries. Two series of organoclay nanocomposites with increasing amount of active antifungal drug ciclopiroxolamine were successfully synthesized through the intercalation reaction. In the first case clay mineral vermiculite was used as supporting matrix and secondly clay mineral bentonite was used. The structural characteristics of all prepared samples were studied by XRD and FTIR techniques. Furthermore, the content of organic carbon was determined for nanocomposite samples. Antimicrobial activity of nanocomposites was tested against bacterial strains Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, and against yeast Candida albicans and it was evaluated by finding minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Generally, nanocomposites based on clay mineral bentonite possess better antimicrobial activity.
