Development of an axial impulse turbine for a small-scale ORC system

  • Original language description

This paper presents the detailed design of an axial impulse turbine for a small-scale ORC utilising a low-temperature heat source. The design process integrates 1D mean-line calculations, CFD simulations, and engineering analyses to optimize the turbine's performance. The CFD results predict an isentropic efficiency exceeding 70% for the turbine, operating with R1233zd(E) as the working fluid at a design rotational speed of 27,000 rpm and an expansion pressure ratio of 6.4. The turbine serves as the core component of a turbogenerator prototype, featuring a conventional geared drive train with a magnetic coupling, delivering a nominal electric output of 13 kW. This research advances the development of high-efficiency small-scale ORC systems, positioning the turbine design as a promising solution for enhanced waste heat recovery and decentralized energy production.
