Production of aromatics and light hydrocarbons by thermo-catalytic pyrolysis of waste polyolefins

  • Original language description

Topic presented at SSCHE2023. Chemical recycling offers the possibility of transforming waste plastics into important chemicals which can be used as feedstocks in chemical and petrochemical industries. Thermo-catalytic pyrolysis is considered as promising process for the chemical recycling of waste plastics. During thermo-catalytic pyrolysis, the selectivity of the desired products can be tuned by employing the right catalyst and appropriate operating conditions. Zeolites with their unique pore architectures and tunable textural as well as acidic properties are interesting catalytic materials for such applications. In this respect, the present work deals with the thermo-catalytic conversion of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polypropylene (PP) in two-stage rig over HZSM-5 zeolites featuring different silicon to aluminum ratios and, consequently, carrying different acid site densities. It was shown that HZSM-5 zeolite catalyst with higher acid site density promotes the aromatization producing mainly BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes) compounds in the liquid phase. On the other hand, catalyst featuring low acid site density promotes the formation light (C2-C4) olefins in the gas phase. The non-catalytic pyrolysis produced almost entirely aliphatic hydrocarbons in the pyrolysis oil and gave comparatively lower yields of light olefins in the gas phase.
