CHEMICAL RECYCLING OF WASTE POLYOLEFINS VIA THERMO-CATALYTIC PYROLYSIS: A DESCRIPTION FOR DIFFERENT FEEDSTOCKS AND REACTOR CONFIGURATIONS
Original language description
Presentation at ICCT2023. The global production and consumption of plastics has increased dramatically over the past few decades. This has led to an exponential increase in the plastic waste generation/accumulation rate which represents serious threats to both terrestrial and marine ecosystems. The conventional waste treatment methods (e.g. mechanical recycling and incineration) are not able to cope with the waste generation rate (especially of impure/contaminated plastics) and ever stricter environmental regulations on CO2 emissions as well as required recycling rates. Chemical recycling is an important alternative to conventional treatment of plastic wastes. It offers the possibility of transforming waste plastics into valuable chemicals which can subsequently serve as feedstocks in chemical and petrochemical industries. In this regard, chemical recycling by thermo-catalytic pyrolysis is an attractive approach for transforming waste plastics of various kinds into useful chemicals. In our recent work we have reported thermo-catalytic pyrolysis of virgin LDPE over HZSM-5 zeolite catalysts investigating the influence of catalyst acidity, operation mode and process parameters. In continuation of this recent work, the present study deals with the thermo-catalytic pyrolysis of waste polyolefins in one- and two-stage rigs over HZSM-5 zeolites. The main aim of the present work was to investigate the influence of different feedstocks (featuring different additives) and the reactor configuration on the product distribution. It was demonstrated that the reactor configuration as well as the acidity of HZSM-5 catalysts strongly influence the product yields and distributions. Different types of waste polyolefins on the other hand showed comparatively small yet noticeable effect. Moreover, it was shown that the HZSM-5 catalysts exhibit good regeneration capacity during several regeneration-reaction cycles.
