Beneficial Effects of Cranberries on Prostate Health: Evidence from a Randomized Controlled Trial
Original language description
Our trial is the first to evaluate cranberry in the therapy of LUTS specifically in men with an elevated PSA level and nonbacterial prostatitis. Based on our results, application of cranberry appears to be very efficient to improve the ?prostate health?both in patients with elevated PSA at histologically evidenced prostatitis and for improvement of urination and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Unlike currently applied medicaments for prostatitis/LUTS therapy, cranberry has minimal adverse effects. Our findings can help men suffering from LUTS and their clinicians decide about therapy with a cheap, natural product like cranberry. The limitations of this study include the relatively small number of men. Given the probability that some responses onIPSS questionnaire in the Cranberry group may have been secondary to a placebo effect rather than a physiological one, the need for a placebo group in a future study is even more apparent.
