Background and objectives: Matrix MetalloProteinases (MMPs) and Tissue Inhibitors of MetalloProteinases (TIMPs) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). However, the majority of reports focus only on single MMPs and limited information about parallel serum expression of MMPs and their antagonists TIMPs exists so far. The aim of this study was, therefore, to investigate serum expression profile of MMP1,2,3,7,8,9,12,13 and TIMP1,2,3,4 in COPD. Methods: We used multiple microsphere technology to assess the serum concentrations of MMP1,2,3,7,8,9 and TIMP1,2,3,4 in COPD patients (n=74) and control subjects (n=20). Subanalysis was performed according to GOLD stage and smoking status. Results: In comparison with control subjects, the elevated concentrations of MMP1,2,3,7,8,9 were observed in serum from COPD patients (p-range: 0.001-0.043).
