Background: According to the need of financial means in the system of health care, managers of health care providers can face to the new questions how to guarantee the job satisfaction and retention of quality health workers, especially nurses. Methods:The main aim of survey was to find out the order and distance of work environment factors on the personal values ladder and the perceived saturation of the values ladder. On the principles of Herzberg two-factor theory a questionnaire form was created. Results: 1992 nurses working in the hospitals in the Czech Republic were interviewed in 2011. The highest value of these respondents was salary/wage, a care about patients and job security (listed by importance). Conclusion: A survey identified the factors of work environment which can be used for the effective motivation, job satisfaction and retention.
