  • Original language description

In Chapter 14 - Sonoembryology- early embryonic and fetal development are described in details from 4th until 12th gestational weeks. Readers are offered description of the development of various embryonic and fetal structures accompanied by clear two- and three-dimensional and ultrasound images and short video clips that are truly informative of sonoembryology. The description of age in traditional embryology is different from that used in obstetrics. Gestational (menstrual) age in obstetrics and fetal medicine represents embryonic age plus 14 days. In this chapter, the term menstrual (gestational) age is used, because this is the parameter widely used in clinical medicine. In embryology, the most widely used method for the classification of human embryos is the Carnegie staging system, which divides the embryonic period into 23 developmental stages, starting with fertilization at stage 1 and finishing with the onset of marrow formation in the humerus at stage 23 (approximately 56–57 postovulatory days, 10 gestational weeks, crown-rump length [CRL] 30 mm). From the end of stage 23 onward, the term embryo is replaced by term fetus.
