Teaching histology in the age of virtual microscopy and e- resources: Is a tailored approach to domestic and international students warranted?

  • Original language description

There are only rare reports addressing the learning habits and major difficulties occurring in the study of medicine in the digital era. We investigated if a tailored approach to international and domestis student is needed. The cross-sectional study was performed in May 2019 at Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry Palacky University Olomouc. We distributed a validated, research-made questionnaire to all students who had scheduled Histology using census sampling method. We collected 192 evaluable questionnaires from Czech students and 61 from international students. The differences between the opinions of Czech and international students were tested using Fisher´s exact and chi-square test. Obtained results revealed that international students rely less on printed textbooks (6.9 % vs. 17.3 %) and using materials from lectures (35.3 % vs. 9.2 %) (P < 0.0001), they more inclinate to use virtual microscopy only (P < 0.0001) and they study in small groups than alone (35.5 % vs. 4.7 %) (P < 0.0001) in comparison to Czech students. According to their opinion, international students were less prepared from high school in theoretical knowledge than their Czech counterparts (P = 0.0218). The majority of international students (62.3 %) would appreciated preparatory course to unify their knowledge of basic sciences before beginning of medical studies, but there are no differences in this opinion between native and non-native English speakers (P = 0.6506). Domestics as well as international students identified very similar problems when studying Histology. All students would also appreciate the introduction of interactive tests to practice both, practical and theoretical knowledge. A tailored approach to different groups of students is needed, despite the introduction of modern digital technologies such as a Virtual Microscopy in teaching Histology.
