This paper is concerned with the debate over the specific character of American society and literature, the general sense of cultural handicap as well as the sense of American exceptionalism, rooted in the fresh national pride based on the achievements of a young democracy and dynamic pace of changes. The paper sums up the debate and shows how Cooper managed to adapt himself to the new program of American literature as well as transcend its narrow limits.

Článek se zabývá procesem formování rané americké literatury a hledáním její specifičnosti v kontextu diskusí o komplexu kulturní méněcennosti a amerického pocitu mravní, duchovní a politické výlučnosti. Recepce rané tvorby J.F. Coopera jasně ukazuje stav debaty a cesty, které se otevíraly. Článek odhaluje, jak se Cooper dovedl přizpůsobit dobovým požadavkům, ale jak je dokázal i tvůrčím způsobem překonat.
