The text Focuses on several selected traditional literary types as they appear in American literature and are included in theories of American literature. At first, the connection between literary type and American national character is discussed. Two major types existing in canonical as well as popular literature are analyzed ? the Yankee and the Backwoodsman. The text then focuses the theories of a typical American literary character, especially those by Henry Nash Smith, R.W.B. Lewis, Leslie Fiedler,Richard Lehan. Despite their partial insightfulness, the paper illustrates their inadequacy when applied to a modern canonical text ? Beloved by Toni Morrison.

Příspěvek se zabývá několika vybranými tradičními typy, které se objevují v americké literatuře a jimž se rozličné teorie americké literatury věnují. Nejprve je rozebráno, jak se pojem americtví vztahuje na literární typy. Dále příspěvek charakterizuje dva typy, které se objevují nejen v kanonické literatuře, ale i v populární kultuře. Jsou jimi Yankee a zálesák (též označovaný jako hraničář) a věnuje se teoriím o podstatě a charakteristice typického amerického literárního hrdiny. Zmíněn je Henry Nash Smith, R.W.B. Lewis, Leslie Fiedler, Richard Lehan. I přes určitý vhled těchto teorií závěr příspěvku ilustruje jejich slabost aplikováním na dílo Milovaná Toni Morrisonové.
