The Formation and Transformation of the American Literary Canon

Original language description

The article outlines the development of the concept of the American literary canon and follows its major changes. American literature was not recognized as an independent tradition until the 1890s and the first canon was still dependent on British aesthetic criteria. Two main revisions of American literary tradition came into the existence in the 1920s, both later desclaimed by the Post World War II developmental dynamics resulting in the refusla of the monolithical cultural tradition. The influence ofNew Criticism and the movement for openin-up of the canon are discussed. The last part focuses on the gradual acceptance of divergent minority literatures as well as on the impact of feminist scholarship on the American literary canon.

Příspěvek se zabývá vývojem pojetí amerického literárního kánonu a hlavními změnami, jimiž prošlo. Americká literatura nebyla pokládána za samostatnou literární tradici až téměř do konce 19. století a první kánon byl závislý na britských estetických měřítcích. Milníky ve vývoji pak představují 20. léta 20. století (Nová kritika), poválečný vývoj, léta 60. revidující dosavadní přístupy a hnutí za otevření kánonu. Závěrem se příspěvek soustředí na postupné přijetí menšinových literatur do kánonu a na vlivfeministické literární teorie a kritiky.
