The reign of the Han dynasty (206 BC?220 AD) is one of the most important periods in the history of Chinese linguistics: except historical lexicology, another innovative field of Chinese linguistics is grammatology that is represented by Xu Shen?s ?? (54-125) giant monograph Shuo Wen Jie Zi??????The Meaning Explanation of Primary Characters and Structure Analysis of Secondary Characters. The main purpose of this monumental work is interpretation of 9,353 graphemes? original meaning divided by their graphic constituents into 540 groupings. The book also declares a concept of the LIU SHU??six categories of Chinese characters, which emphasises Chinese writing as an organic system: the principle that every single Chinese character?s construction is described in six basic rules.
