Perception of vowel quantity by English learners of Czech and native listeners
Original language description
This paper reports on a pilot study of the perception of Czech vowel quantity by native listeners and by second-language (L2) users of Czech whose first language is English. Since in English vowel duration is one of the perceptual cues for lexical stress, perceiving L2 Czech vowel quantity may be affected by stress in English learners. In a perceptual identification experiment no differences between English and Czech listeners with respect to the location of the short/long vowel boundary were found in astressed or an unstressed syllable. However, the two groups of listeners differed in the steepness of the identification function because the native listeners showed categorical perception of the short/long contrast while the non-natives had a more continuous perception.
