The Legacy of the Vortex: Popular Music as Counter-environment
Original language description
The article presents a couple of mcluhanesque reflections on popular music focusing primarily on the question whether popular music can work as a counter-environment. It begins by outlining Marshall McLuhan's media theory and by discussing its roots in Ezra Pound's ideogrammic and vorticist method. The article then examines the relationship between music and myth, drawing mainly on Lévi-Strauss' thoughts. The greatest attention is paid to exploring the media environment of Bob Dylan's songs which seem to present the most elaborate counter-environment of contemporary popular music.
