The Transformation of Place in James Fenimore Cooper's novel The Pioneers
Original language description
The paper examines the contradictory interpretations and evaluations of the transformation of place in James Fenimore Cooper's novel The Pioneers (1823) and focuses on the relation between the frame (extradiegetic opening) and the diegetic narrative. Thecritics generally regard the frame as a pastoral conclusion of the disruptive post-revolutionary transformation of the frontier. In my interpretation, however, this process that includes important displacements and erasures is already configured in theseemingly idyllic frame.
