The Have Construction/s: A Pilot Corpus-Based Study
Original language description
The chapter investigates the usage of the constructions with have complemented by a noun phrase and a non-finite verb form in a parsed corpus of present-day British English (ICE-GB). No strict formal criteria differentiating the experiential and the causative reading of have could be identified; instead, the data suggest that both readings of have are instantiations of one construction with have as a mere copula linking a secondary predication to a topical participant with concern or interest in the event expressed in the secondary predication (cf. Poldauf 1940, Poldauf 1967). Causative interpretations of have are always at hand if the event expressed in the secondary predication is to the benefit of the participant, not to his/her detriment. Parallelswith the Czech non-attached dative suggest an important role this construction has in expressing what Poldauf calls the third syntactic plan (1964).
