Cause and Concern: The Have Construction with the Infinitive Seen through Its Czech Translation Equivalents
Original language description
This chapter investigates the functions of what Poldauf (1967) calls the Have-construction, namely the construction with the infinitive (have NP Vinf), through its Czech correspondences in the parallel translation corpus Intercorp. The correspondences reveal a force dynamic usage of the construction (not only causative but also modal verbs are used in Czech), its experiential function (the subject of this construction corresponds to the Czech non-attached dative form), but also a number of unified forcedynamic - experiential readings, which may arise under certain conditions. The chapter then focuses on the restrictions on the usage of the non-attached dative form in the zero correspondences of the subject of the experiential have.
