Discourse Markers: A Text Perspective
Original language description
The chapter discusses words, phrases and expressions called discourse markers, their form, function and distribution in text. The focus is on longer sequences of discourse markers and on the environment in which these sequences tend to occur. Discourse markers are context-bound, context-sensitive words, and their function is therefore realized depending on their surrounding context. Since these expressions are more likely to occur in spontaneous spoken conversation, the spoken subcorpora of the BritishNational Corpus and Corpus of Contemporary American English were used to carry out the research. The chapter is also intended to help learners of English acquire the phrases in the process of their learning and therefore sound more natural.
