The Infinitive and the -ing Form after the Verbs Begin and Start: The Case of Cry
Original language description
The chapter deals with the two basic English verbs denoting the beginning of a verbal event, begin and start, when complemented by the to infinitive and the -ing form. The analysis is based on the British National Corpus. Begin prefers the to infinitiveto the -ing form in both written in spoken English. It is much less frequent in spoken language, and hardly ever followed by the ing form there. Start favours the -ing form, particularly in spoken English. This supports the alleged proximity of start -ing to progressive tenses functionally parallel to the Czech verbal prefix roz- in its inchoative meaning.
