Progressive Form and State Verbs
Original language description
In English, the progressive form, which is the combination of be and a verb in the -ing form is in general less frequently used than the simple verbal forms. Moreover, the verbs that describe a state rather than an activity, are not frequently encountered in the progressive form. The occurrences of several "verbs of attitude" and "verbs of inert cognition" (Leech 2004) and their translations were closely examined in order to find out whether and how the meanings of the progressive form are reflected bythe Czech translations.
