Re-evaluating the Progressive Form: The Case of English Verbs of Attitude

  • Original language description

This chapter investigates the use of the progressive forms of the English verbs of attitude (sometimes called anti-progressive verbs) through their Czech translation equivalents. A detailed analysis of Czech translation equivalents of the verbs hope, enjoy, want, love, wish, and like in the progressive form in the parallel translation corpus Intercorp shows a frequent use of Czech action verbs, a tendency to use a verb expressing a higher degree of intensity than its English source and the use of degreemodifiers.
